"The Turetsky Choir (Khor Tureckogo) is a Russian musical group that is known and loved on all continents. And for good reason. Flawless performance, polyphony, multi-genre repertoire, original vocal technique, interaction with the audience - they have everything to conquer listeners of any age. They sing in more than 10 languages, perform a cappella compositions and never perform with a phonogram.
The group began their career with Jewish liturgical music. Today they sing classical, rock, opera, jazz, pop, chanson and whatever they wish.
Michael Turetsky: founder, leader, inspirer
After graduating from the music institute, the young and talented Mikhail was full of ambition. He gathered a small children's choir and began to teach children vocals. A little later he became a choirmaster in the theater of Yuri Shering. In 1989, Turetsky organized a real men's choir in the Moscow synagogue. From that moment, his personal life was put on the back burner - a new era in his biography began.
The concept of the project was to revive Jewish spiritual music. For many years, this direction was forgotten in the USSR. It became the main repertoire of the choir. Mikhail Turetsky adhered to the traditional manner of performance - "a cappella". The lack of musical accompaniment required great skill and professionalism from the artist. And they possessed the necessary qualities.
The stage of brass music
In the fall of 1989, the members of the collective began to write the history of the great art group "Turetsky Choir". In the spring of the following year, they already gave their debut public performance. Kaliningrad and Tallinn were the first to hear the choir. They followed with concerts in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kiev. Interest in Jewish music flared up with new vigor.
In 1991-1992 they toured all over the world: France, Canada, USA, England, Israel, Spain. The public received them very warmly and marveled at their powerful singing.
In 1993 Michael Turetsky was awarded one of the most prestigious music prizes - "The Golden Crown of Cantors of the World". At that time, only eight people on the entire planet were honored with such an award.
After one successful performance in Miami in 1995, the group split into two parts: some returned to Russia, others stayed there and continued to work under contract. The repertoire of the second group took a different shape - they began to sing Broadway classics, jazz and blues. It was during this period that they had the idea to try themselves in a more modern genre, to get closer to the stage, to reach a different audience.
During the formation of the musical group, they were financed by the charity organization "Joint", then the travel company People Travel Club. Thanks to such strong support they managed to travel the world. But in 1996 there were difficulties with money support. At that moment Iosif Kobzon helped them. Together with him, the choir went on tour to the countries of the former USSR.
Returning, they decided to organize a grand concert. The performance was scheduled for Saturday, which contradicts the canons of Judaism. In this regard, they were forbidden to sing in the synagogue. Then they moved the event to the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the support of Yuri Luzhkov. Soon the collective became municipal and was called "Moscow Jewish Choir".
The period from 1998 to 2003 was another protracted tour. Their creativity was highly appreciated by critics, they were adored by the public. They performed in the CIS countries, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Israel, Australia. The people of America had a special love for them. They even declared February 6 the Day of the Moscow Jewish Choir.
Huge popularity and worldwide recognition prompted in them the desire to sing for a wider audience.
The stage of reincarnation and the peak of fame
In 2003, they renamed themselves the art group "Turetsky Choir", radically changing their image and repertoire. A new page in the biography of the collective began. They did not stop performing Jewish liturgical compositions, but they put a great emphasis on a genre that was not typical for them at all - foreign and domestic pop. In time they expanded their program of performances so much that they even performed "Murka". They performed opera, folklore, classics and jazz. They broke into the largest concert venues of the country, conquering the audience with their voices.
Such changes in the concept were not to everyone's liking. Several people left the art project. Two new soloists took their place.
In 2004, the "Turetsky Choir" gave a concert "Ten Voices That Shook the World". Together with them on stage came the maestros of the Russian variety: Larisa Dolina, Philip Kirkorov, Nikolai Baskov and others. The performance was a resounding success. It was even nominated for the title of "Cultural Event of the Year". In the fall of the same year, they created a fresh, no less amazing program "When Men Sing".
Having loudly announced their new "image" at home, the group once again went on foreign tours. They traveled to dozens of countries and gave hundreds of concerts. The following years they actively perform, replenish their discography and never cease to surprise listeners. Each of their tours is distinguished by an original program. As guests with them often sing not only the best voices of Russia, but also foreign vocalists.
In 2014, they gathered 19 thousand spectators at Olimpiyskiy and created a grandiose show program called "A Man's View of Love". And in honor of Victory Day they arranged a large-scale concert on Poklonnaya Hill, which was watched by about 150 thousand people. They are deservedly called record-breakers of popularity, because the "Turetsky Choir" united all continents under the aegis of love for music.
