DDT (DDT) is a Russian rock band with Yuri Shevchuk as its constant leader and composer. In the common people the collective is known as "Dust". For many years of existence, it remains the avant-garde of the genre in the domestic arena. The discography of the group counts dozens of songs that remain popular even today. For many years of existence, the members of DDT have had ups and downs, the collective has experienced many transformations. But the unchanging leader of the band always managed to bring the project to a new level.
Creation, founders and first steps in creativity
The musical group was created in the early 80s. The place of its birth is Ufa. In 1979, Yuri Shevchuk met with keyboardist Vladimir Sigachev. The history of the collective began.
Initially the band was called "Ensemble under the direction of Gennady Rodin". The collective consisted of:
- Vova Sigachev;
- Rustem Asanbayev;
- Gena Rodin;
- Rinat Shamsutdinov;
- Yura Shevchuk.
The collection consisted of well-known tracks of foreign performers in their own performance. But in time it was replenished with compositions of his own composition, authored by the soloist of DDT. The first collection was not widely distributed. The album included nine songs, but they were characterized by high sound quality. In the repertoire there were rock ballads, blues compositions, folk motifs, hard rock.
In 1982 the guys had an opportunity to record a professional album. They applied for participation in the contest "Golden Cameraton". According to the terms of the project, novice bands had to send 3 songs. The musicians made it to the next round. Victory to the novice rock-collective brought the work "Do not shoot". It was at this point that it was necessary to come up with a name for the band. Sigachev suggested "DDT." The participants were invited to record a free album at the Melodiya studio.
The first concert was held in Ufa at the Oil Institute. It was attended by citizens and visiting German tourists. But there was a conflict with the authorities. Officially, rock'n'roll as a genre of music was not banned, so everything went without a verbal warning.
1982 was marked by the release of the record "Pig on the Rainbow". Like the first compilation, it was an experimental project. During this period, the guys had not yet exactly defined their repertoire, so the album featured rock and roll, blues and country elements.
A year later the band was on the verge of disintegration. The leader of the collective Y. Shevchuk and another member of the collective moved to Cherepovets, where they began to cooperate with the members of the band "Rock September". They had high-quality recording equipment. DDT musicians hoped for help. As a result of joint work, the album "Compromise" was created. This collection made the band more famous, and also opened the way for them to the stadium "Luzhniki", where the music festival was held. The album contained 10 compositions. The most famous ones are: the re-recorded in good quality version of "Don't Shoot", "Sitting on a Hard Stool".
Leningrad period
For several months the leader of the band travels in order to earn money to buy recording equipment. In 1994, there are changes in the lineup. A new drummer Sergei Rudoy comes to the collective. During this period, a new album "Periphery" was released. Soon DDT gave a concert in the Palace of Culture. Because of him, the group fell under the ban. Musicians began to perform under the name "Niyaz Abdyushev with friends". But the deception was soon uncovered.
Then Shevchuk and Sigachyov worked on a new compilation. New musicians joined the collective: Sergei Ryzhenko and Sergei Letov. The band members failed to sign contracts with studios for the release of a new album. They had to record it at friends' apartment in Moscow.
In 1986 Yuri moved to the Northern capital. At the beginning of the next year the band gave concerts in a rock club. At that time the composition looked as follows:
- Yuri Shevchuk;
- drummers Igor Dotsenko, Vova Sigachev, Sergey Letov;
- guitarists Andrey Vasiliev and Nikita Zaitsev;
- saxophonist Mikhail Chernov;
- bassist Vadim Kurylev.
Two years after the move, DDT released their legendary album "I Got the Part". It was recorded by Melodiya. The album was sold in the USSR in huge circulation - more than 2 million copies were sold. 1989 - the year of prosperity and popularity for DDT. After that, touring and concerts began. The musicians gained nationwide love.
In 1991, when the tour came to its end, the guys started working on a new record. The collection "Thaw" was released. On one side was rock and roll, on the second - philosophical reflections. This compilation included the famous composition "Leningrad". In 1992, the album "Actress Spring" was released. It included legendary creations: "What is Autumn", "Homeland", "Rain", "In the last autumn". A music video was shot for the first composition. In the video involved stars of Russian rock. In honor of the new album, the musicians presented a concert program "Black Dog Petersburg". "DDT" collected huge stadiums in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk and Kiev. In 1993 the band was awarded the title of the best rock band, and the leader became the best singer in this genre.
Two years later DDT released the album "That's All...". With new songs and already known old compositions, the band gave a concert to the military in the capital of the Chechen Republic.
Further development
In honor of the 15th anniversary of the collective, the album "From and to" was released. The line-up underwent another change. Igor Tikhomirov and Dima Galitsky joined the band. Together the musicians visited America to record an album with the lyrical title "Love".
In 1996 DDT organized a rock festival. Famous musicians and novice bands were invited to perform on stage. After 2 years the band presented to the fans a new musical program "World No. 0". The tours continued till 1999. And in 2000 DDT released three collections:
- "The Best Songs" in two parts;
- "Blizzard of August";
- "Prosvistela".
During the next three years they worked on two parts of the collection "Unity". Both were released in the early 2000s with a year's difference.
In honor of their 25th anniversary the rock musicians presented to the world the album "Missing in Action" and went on tour in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, Great Britain and Israel. In 2007 the collection "Beautiful Love" was presented. It included hits born in the 90s and new songs. A year later DDT went on tour overseas: to Canada and America.
During the next years, the collection of works was replenished with new albums and hits. Despite the change of members, DDT remain popular and gather thousands of listeners and fans at their performances. Several movies were filmed about the band, and the compositions of musicians are used as soundtracks to movies. They sounded in such films as "Russian Transit", "Ice Age", "Truckers", Generation P, "Coach" and others.
